Silent Groove was part of a bigger project called Music For Photographs. I built a pinhole camera out of a record player and made a series of photographs with it, shooting with large format 5x7" film stuck to the turntable platter. I then converted these images into sound using a programme called Metasynth. It was originally released as a small batch of hand-crafted books and CDr for an exhibition back in 2005. In addition to using Metasynth, I sampled the sounds of the enormous De Vere enlarger that was used to make the 30" diameter photographs. A group that I know only too well, I’ve been with them for nearly 30 years; from their Glaswegian basement origins to their current status as Arena band. My enthusiasm for their later output may have tempered somewhat as the mighty ‘Gwai evolved their sound to avoid pigeonholing, but there is nothing better than when they lay waste to a venue via the sheer euphoria of ‘Helicon 1’.
